Never mistake a clear view for a short distance.”
– Paul Saffo
Tuesday’s result was both unexpected and, of course, a hard shake-up of my reality. As it was and continues to be for many if not most of us. How could I have so badly misread the pulse of my fellow citizens, I keep asking myself.
I’m seeing a lot of interesting commentary about what this means, what we can and must learn from this setback, and how and where we go from here. I have just started working on an essay on this Big Subject, and will share it when it’s completed. Still thinking and absorbing.
I’ll also be doing more reading/listening/reflecting, paying some overdue attention to other tasks and people, getting a little R&R … etc.
But the dream of a Whole New World, and my faith in our ability to create this world, is still alive if not-seeming-too-well.
As Kamala said in her concession speech:
On the campaign, I would often say when we fight, we win. But here’s the thing, here’s the thing, sometimes the fight takes a while. That doesn’t mean we won’t win. That doesn’t mean we won’t win. The important thing is don’t ever give up. Don’t ever give up. Don’t ever stop trying to make the world a better place. You have power. You have power.”
– Kamala Harris
So rest up. Power up. We’ve got more work to do.
And we’ve got the moral arc of the universe on our side.

Thanks, Beth. That conviction pretty much underpins my inveterate optimism. And great that you’re interested in seeing my essay! Now I just need to write it. 🙂 But it will come, thoughts and themes are taking form.
